Gunhild Hagestad

Gunhild Oline Hagestad (born November 6, 1942 in Birkenes ) is a Norwegian university professor and sociologist . Her work focuses on issues related to families , aging and generations .

Life

Hagestad grew up in Birkenes in southern Norway. She initially studied sociology , ethnology and pedagogy at the University of Oslo , but moved to the USA with her Hungarian husband during her studies . There she received a master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1972 and finally received her doctorate there in 1975. She then worked at this university until 1978 as an associate professor. She then held the same post between 1978 and 1987 at Northwestern University in Chicago .

After her daughters grew up and she divorced her husband, Hagestad returned to Norway, where she was initially research director at the Institute for Social Studies until 1989. She then worked part-time as a professor at the University of Oslo until 1993 and then rose to full-time professor. However, since she had cancer and had to adapt her life to this situation, she stopped working in Oslo and accepted a professorship in her home country at Agder University . She also held a part-time position at Northwestern University. She is an honorary doctorate at the University of Agder, where she was a professor until 2010. Then she began researching at Akershus University . In 2013 she became the third European woman to be recognized by the American Sociological Association for her research.

research

Hagestad's research deals, among other things, with the changes in family structure and life courses in the face of an aging society. Further topics are the effects of divorce and the distribution of tasks in three-generation families.
