Kjell Ingolf Ropstad (born June 1, 1985 in Arendal , Norway ) is a Norwegian politician and has been party chairman of the Christian Democratic Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF) since April 2019 . He has been a member of parliament in Storting since 2009, and Ropstad has been his country's minister for children and families since January 2019 .

Life

Ropstad is the son of Bjørn Alfred Ropstad (KrF), who was mayor of Evje og Hornnes from 1999 to 2019 . Kjell Ingolf Ropstad studied at the Law Faculty of the University of Oslo from 2005 to 2012 and obtained a bachelor's degree in law and economics. From 2003 to 2007 he sat in the local parliament of Evje og Hornnes and from 2003 to 2009 in the Fylkesting of Aust-Agder . In the 2005 parliamentary elections , he became a so-called Vararepresentant in the Norwegian national parliament Storting , i.e. a substitute member, as which he was first used in 2006 at the age of 20. From 2007 to 2010 he served as chairman of the Christian Democratic youth organization Kristelig Folkepartis Ungdom (KrFU).

Member of the Storting

In the 2009 election , Ropstad moved directly into the Storting for the first time. There he represents the constituency of Aust-Agder and he was initially a member of the labor and social committee before moving to the energy and environmental committee in September 2012. After the 2013 parliamentary elections , he moved to the Judiciary Committee, where he served as second deputy chairman. Following the 2017 election, Ropstad moved to the finance committee, where he remained until January 2019.

Minister and party leadership

In 2017 he was elected second deputy chairman of Kristelig Folkeparti. When the then party chairman Knut Arild Hareide recommended that the bourgeois minority government under Erna Solberg should no longer be supported, Ropstad was one of the leading opponents of the proposal and instead spoke out in favor of joining the government. The party congress voted on November 2, 2018 in line with Ropstad's line for participation in the Solberg government .

Following the vote, he led his party's coalition talks with the previous governing parties in January 2019. The KrF then entered the government. In the partly newly formed cabinet he was given the post of minister for children and families. Until he took office, his ministry was called the Ministry of Children and Equality (Norwegian: Barne og likestillingsdepartemente t). The opposition parties criticized the fact that the transfer of the gender equality issue to the Ministry of Culture prevented Ropstad from becoming responsible for LGBT issues . Kjell Ingolf Ropstad rejected the criticism and said that he wanted to be minister for all children and family forms.

At a party conference in late April 2019, he was elected as the new chairman of his party.
