Marit Berger Røsland (born September 21, 1978 ) is a Norwegian politician of the conservative party Høyre . From October 2017 to January 2018 she was the European Minister for her country.

Political career

Røsland was a member of the Fylkesting of the former Akershus Province between 1997 and 2000 . From 1998 to 2000 she was chairman of her party's youth organization, Unge Høyre , in Akershus and then until 2002 deputy chairman at national level. In 2001 she missed her entry into the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting . From 2003 to 2005 Røsland worked as a political advisor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 2003 to 2007 she was a city councilor in Oslo .

In 2006 she graduated from Oslo University with a law degree . Between 2006 and 2014 she worked as a lawyer.

In October 2014, she began to work as State Secretary in the Prime Minister's office, i.e. the Norwegian equivalent of the Federal Chancellery . She moved to the Ministry of Justice as State Secretary in December 2015 and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in September 2016. On October 20, 2017, Røsland was appointed Minister for EMU and EU Affairs, an office in the Foreign Ministry. However, she only retained this post for three months, since the office was dissolved on January 17, 2018 and reintegrated into the remit of the Foreign Minister.

After the end of her tenure as minister, she began working in the legal department of the gas and oil production company Equinor . In June 2019, she was elected Chair of the Norwegian Institute for Human Rights by the board of the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting. This aroused criticism from the opposition party Sosialistisk Venstreparti because, as a former minister, it was too closely linked to the government. You could therefore not be an independent management of the institute, which, among other things, should also examine Norwegian authorities for compliance with human rights.
