Sylvi Listhaug

Sylvi Listhaug (born December 25, 1977 in Ålesund ) is a Norwegian politician of the Progress Party (FrP). She held several ministerial offices between October 2013 and January 2020, most recently she was the minister for oil and energy in her country from December 2019 to January 2020 .

Career

Listhaug worked from 1995 to 2000 as a care assistant in an old people's home in Ørskog . She then worked as a teacher until 2001 before becoming a political advisor to the FrP for church and educational policy. Between 2002 and 2006 she was a member of the board of the youth organization Fremskrittspartiets Ungdom (FpU). From 2006 to 2012 she was a member of the Oslo city government, the Byråd . Her area of responsibility was welfare and social services until 2010 and later on health and the elderly. Listhaug then worked as a consultant at the Norwegian consultancy First House until 2013 .

On October 16, 2013 Listhaug was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Food in the Solberg government. On December 16, 2015, she moved to the Ministry of Justice, where she became Minister for the newly created sub-section Immigration and Integration. In the parliamentary elections in 2017 , she entered the Norwegian parliament, the Storting , for the first time for the province of Møre og Romsdal . On January 17, 2018, she was promoted to Minister of Justice. However, under pressure from Parliament, she had to leave this post on March 20, 2018. The occasion was a Facebook posting that was interpreted as a mockery of the victims of the 2011 attacks in Norway . She wrote: “Ap mener at terroristenes rettigheter er viktigere enn nasjonens sikkerhet. Lik og del "( German :" The Ap ( Arbeiderpartiet ) thinks that the rights of terrorists are more important than the security of the nation. Likt and shares. ") After her resignation, Listhaug returned to Storting, where she worked between October 2018 and May 2019 was a member of the parliamentary committee of the FrP.

In September 2018, the party executive proposed Sylvi Listhaug for the party's deputy chairmanship and she was appointed temporary deputy. In May 2019 she was confirmed in this position by the party congress.

On May 3, 2019 - about a year after her resignation as Minister of Justice - she was introduced as the new Minister for Seniors and Public Health, replacing her predecessor Åse Michaelsen . It was the wish of the FrP leadership to reinstate their vice-chairwoman in the government. On December 18, 2019, she moved to the Ministry of Oil and Energy , where she replaced her party colleague Kjell-Børge Freiberg . She resigned from this office on January 24, 2020 when the FrP left government . With that she returned to the Storting as a member of parliament. Listhaug was then elected FrP's financial policy spokeswoman.

Positions

Sylvi Listhaug belongs to the right wing of the right-wing populist Progress Party. In autumn 2018 she published the book “Der andre tier”, in which she complained about unequal treatment by “the media”, moralizing “opinion police” and the country's “left cultural elite”.

Climate change

After being appointed Minister of Agriculture, she refused to answer the question of whether she still believed that climate change was not man-made. The background to this was an interview from 2011 with the newspaper Verdens Gang (VG), in which she said that it has not been proven that human CO 2 emissions lead to a change in the climate. In December 2019, after being appointed oil and energy minister, she stated that climate change was also caused by humans, but that it was uninteresting how much mankind is to blame for it.

Swedish states

Listhaug has often been criticized for using the expression "Swedish conditions". She mostly used it to speak out against a more liberal immigration policy in Norway, such as can be found in Sweden. For example, during her time as Immigration Minister in June 2017, she used this term to describe the situation in Oslo after cars were set on fire there. Both the then justice minister and party colleague Per-Willy Amundsen and Prime Minister Erna Solberg contradicted her statement.

In August 2017, shortly before the 2017 parliamentary elections , she visited the Stockholm district of Rinkeby-Kista . The Swedish immigration minister Heléne Fritzon canceled the planned meeting with Listhaug. As a reason, Fritzon stated that he did not want to be part of Listhaug's campaign. Erna Solberg also pointed out to Listhaug during her visit that she shouldn't describe the situation in Rinkeby-Kista differently than the local Swedish authorities. Solberg later said that she disagreed with everything Listhaug had said during the visit.

health

In May 2019, a few days after her appointment as Minister for Seniors and Public Health, she caused a sensation both nationally and internationally: In an interview, she said that people should smoke, drink and eat raw meat as much as they want.

criticism

When she was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Food, Listhaug refused to disclose which companies were among her customers during her time with the consulting firm First House . However, she submitted the list of her customers to her ministry in order to give the ministry's staff the opportunity to check their work for conflicts of jurisdiction.

In the summer of 2018, two reports by the parliamentary control body Riksrevisjonen complained about serious deficiencies in Listhaug's government work to secure critical infrastructure and important buildings against terrorist attacks.
