Verdens Gang (short: VG; German  about Lauf der Welt ) is the title of a Norwegian daily newspaper in tabloid format published by Schibsted- Verlag. The newspaper is a member of the journalistic research network European Investigative Collaboration (EIC).

history

Verdens Gang was founded in 1868 as a weekly paper by the teacher Peder Olsen. He edited the paper as a liberal educational paper until his death in 1876. From then on Johan Sverdrup was responsible until 1878. From 1878 to 1910, Olav Thommessen was in charge of the paper. In 1885 it became a daily newspaper. During this time Verdens Gang became Norway's most widely distributed political newspaper. In 1910 there were disagreements between the editors and the owner, and Olav Thommessen left the paper with his staff and founded the newspaper Tidens Tegn , which soon became a great success.

The post-World War I Depression dealt the newspaper a severe economic blow. In 1920, Verdens Gang took over the newspaper Norske Intellektiven-Seddeler , Norway's first newspaper. In 1923 Verdens Gang ceased publication and the publishing rights were transferred to Tidens Tegn .

In 1945, shortly after Norway was liberated from German occupation in World War II, members of the Norwegian resistance movement re-established a newspaper under the name Verdens Gang . The first edition appeared on June 23, 1945.

In 1958, Verdens Gang began collecting music charts . The VG-lista are used as a reference for the weekly charts in Norway.

Verdens Gang, mostly abbreviated to "VG", was Norway's largest circulation newspaper from 1981 to 2010; With a circulation of around 233,000 pieces in 2010, it was overtaken by Aftenposten (circulation: 239,831). Torry Pedersen has been the editor-in-chief since 2011.

style

Compared to the German press landscape, VG can best be equated with the tabloid Bildzeitung in terms of content and layout . VG has also made a name for itself by allowing citizen journalism .
