Bradley Raymond "Brad" Gushue , ONL (born June 16, 1980 in St. John's , Newfoundland ) is a Canadian curler and Olympic champion .

Life

He won the junior title of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador six times (1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001), the last five titles in the position of skip. In 2001 he not only won the provincial championship, but also became Canadian junior national champion and junior world champion. Gushue had also been called up as a substitute for John Morris at the 1998 Junior World Cup in 1998, with Morris winning the tournament.

After his junior career Gushue quickly rose to one of the best players in his province and qualified in 2003, 2004 and 2005 respectively for the national championship The Brier . In late 2005, Gushue added former world champion Russ Howard to his team and won the Canadian qualifying tournament for the 2006 Winter Olympics . In Pinerolo , he led the Canadian team to win the Olympic gold medal.

Gushue has competed many times for Newfoundland and Labrador in the Canadian championship The Brier. In 2017 he won the tournament for the first time with his team members Mark Nichols , Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker and was allowed to represent Canada at the 2017 World Cup in Edmonton . There he remained undefeated in the round robin and won the page playoff against the Swedish team around Niklas Edin . In 2018 he was able to defend his title at the Canadian Championships and competed again for Canada at the 2018 World Cup . After a third place in the Round Robin, a victory against the USA (Skip: Rich Ruohonen ) in the qualifying game and against Scotland (Skip: Bruce Mouat ) in the semifinals, the final pairing of the previous year was repeated. There Gushue had to admit defeat to the Swedish team of Niklas Edin 3: 7 and be satisfied with the silver medal.

Gushue plays for the Bally Haly Country Club in St. John's and owns a company. He is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right To Play .
