World Curling Championship
The World Curling Championships are annual tournaments to determine the world's best curling teams. Since its inception, the World Championships have been dominated by Canada . However, Switzerland , Sweden , Denmark , Germany , Scotland , the USA and Norway have won at least once. The world championships are organized by the World Curling Federation .
history
1959 took place in Scotland with the Scotch Cup for the first time the forerunner of today's curling world championships; then Scotland played against Canada. From 1961 to 1967 the number of participating teams varied between three and eight. In 1968 the Scotch Cup was given the status of an official curling world championship.
The first women's world championships took place in 1979 and were held separately from the men's world championships until 1988, and together from 1989 to 2004. Since 2005 the men's and women's competitions have been held separately again. One of the two world championships is to be held in Canada every year. Gold, silver and bronze medals have been awarded from 1968 to 1988 and since 1995. From 1989 to 1994 both the third and fourth placed received a bronze medal.
