final

In the finals between the previously unbeaten Canadians and the United States led to a serious incident that the Curse of LaBonte ( German  Curse of LaBonte ) in the curling history came in. The Americans were in the lead by two stones before the tenth end (9: 7). The Canadian Skip Orest Meleschuk played the last stone in the tenth end, which ricocheted off a Canadian stone in the house and slid to the edge of the house next to an American stone. This was closer to the center of the house than the Canadian stone. US skip Robert "Bob" LaBonte and Third Frank Aasand stood in close proximity and saw this, whereupon they jumped in the air for joy at the supposed victory. On landing, LaBonte slipped on the ice and shifted the Canadian stone. Then the Canadians got their two stones in the house and due to the tie of 9: 9 an extra end had to decide the World Cup final. Skip Meleschuk put the last Canadian stone close to the center of the house. With the last stone, LaBonte had the chance to decide the game for the Americans. But LaBonte gave the stone too much momentum, so that it only came to a standstill behind the house. Canada was able to celebrate its twelfth world title, while the Americans were very disappointed. For the series world champion Canada, this World Cup was also the beginning of a dry spell until the 1980 World Curling Championship without a men's title.
