The Olympia Ice Sports Center is an ice sports facility in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . It comprises three covered halls (including a curling hall) and an uncovered outdoor area with an ice rink and a playing field for curling. In addition to its function as the federal management center for curling and ice stock , it is used by SC Riessersee , SC Garmisch-Partenkirchen and TSV Farchant as a game and training facility.

history

The construction of the Olympic ice stadium , which is the largest hall to this day , began in August 1934 in view of the 1936 Winter Olympics and was completed in December 1934 after just 106 working days. The plans came from Hanns Ostler and Theo Pabst (ice facility). The stadium, which was not covered at the time, offered space for 7,000 spectators.

As early as 1939, due to the 1940 Winter Olympics, which were again awarded to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the first renovation and expansion work was carried out. An extensive redesign of the area planned by Hanns Ostler, which included the replacement of the stadium with three ice rinks with a total of 9,000 m² of ice surface, the construction of a training hall and the construction of a large 400 m speed skating rink, was not implemented.

The stadium was completely roofed in 1964 based on a design by Franz Hart by the Frisch / Krupp-Altlach companies. The reconstruction work at that time also included the reconstruction of the grandstands, so that the maximum capacity since 1964 was 10,500 seats.

On April 4, 1987, the roof of the stadium was completely covered by a strong foehn storm . The damage amounted to 1 million DM.

In 1994 the stadium was extensively rebuilt for the last time. In the Olympic Ice Stadium, for example, the south stand, which until then had only been standing, was converted into a pure seating stand. Since then, this hall offers space for 6,926 spectators. In addition, as part of the renovation, another covered ice rink with a 670-person grandstand and a curling hall with three lanes were added to the south of the existing hall.
