Junior World Curling Championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Junior World Curling Championships are an annual tournament to determine the world's best curling teams whose members are 21 years of age or younger. The men's world championships have been held since 1975, those of the women since 1988. Both tournaments take place at the same place (with the exception of 1988). The tournaments are organized by the World Curling Federation .

Qualification process

In addition to the host country, the six best nations from the previous Junior World Championships and the three best teams from the Junior B World Championships that took place in the same year have qualified since 2016 . If the host country is one of the six best in the Junior World Championship last year, the seventh place will be awarded the starting place. A placement of the host among the top three of the Junior B World Championship is excluded, as he is not eligible to start there

Until 2015 there was a qualification process according to the three zones: America, Europe and the Pacific. Both teams from the host country were always qualified. The five most successful teams from the previous year from Europe took part (or a different team from the same country). The other European teams competed in the Curling Junior Challenge for the possibility of participating in the Junior World Championship. If this was played in North or South America, the two best teams in the challenge tournament qualified, otherwise only the winner. In the zone of the American double continent, a team was automatically qualified, either as host or, if the championship was held outside of America, the most successful team of the previous year. In addition, another starting place was given to the other team from the previous year, or to the winner of a challenge tournament if there was a challenger. From the Pacific zone, the winner of the junior pacific curling championship participated, or, if the junior world championship was held in the country of the pacific champion, the team that placed second.

In the years 2001 to 2004 the last two of the tournament relegated to a B group and were replaced by the first two of this group.
