Grande Prairie [ ˈgɹænd ˈpɹɛɹiː ] is the largest city in northwestern Alberta , Canada . It is located 460 km northwest of Edmonton and is within the County of Grande Prairie No. 1 , but is not part of it administratively. Grande Prairie is located in a transition area between prairie and boreal forest west of the Rocky Mountains .
Demographics
The census in 2016 showed a population of 63,166 inhabitants for the city, after the census in 2011 showed a population of 55,655 inhabitants for the city. The population has increased by 13.5% compared to the last census in 2011 and is again above the provincial average of Alberta with a population increase of 11.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the number of inhabitants in the city had already increased by 16.8% at an above-average rate, while the provincial average had increased by 10.8%.
A median age of 31.9 years was determined for the city for the 2016 census . The median age of the province in 2016 was 36.7 years. The average age was 33.5 years, or 37.8 years in the province. For the 2011 census, a median age of 30.3 years was determined for the city. The median age of the province in 2011 was 36.5 years.
economy
The most important economic sectors are oil and natural gas production , agriculture and forestry , service sectors, tourism and administrative activities . The important CANAMEX trade route (also known as the CANAMEX Corridor) runs through Grande Prairie . This connects Canada via the USA to Mexico .
traffic
The city is a junction of several highways. The Alberta Highway 2 , Alberta Highway 40 and Alberta Highway 43 passing through the city or start or end here. Furthermore, Grande Prairie is connected to the route network of the Canadian National Railway .
Northwest of the city is the local Grande Prairie Airport ( IATA : YQU, ICAO : CYQU), with two asphalt runways of 1,890 and 2,591 meters in length. It is served by Air Canada Express and WestJet Encore , among others .

According to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification , the climate is classified as a humid , warm summer continental climate (Dfb). Occasionally the chinook also appears here .

In 2007 the Natural Track Luge World Championships took place here, after the Canada Games Winter Games took place here in 1995 . In 2010 the city hosted the Arctic Winter Games .
