Carter Rowney (born May 10, 1989 in Grande Prairie , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player on the position of right winger who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League since July 2018 . In the 2017 playoffs , he won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins .
Career
Rowney, who was born in Grande Prairie and grew up in Sexsmith , 20 kilometers away , initially played until 2009 for the junior team of the Grande Prairie Storm from his hometown in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . He led the team to win the Rogers Wireless Cup in the 2008/09 season , while he himself was recognized as the most valuable player because of his 18 scorer points in 19 play-off games . In the summer of 2009, Rowney enrolled at the University of North Dakota after remaining undiminished . There the striker played for the next four years in parallel with his studies for the university ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With the team, the striker won the division's championship trophy in three of the four years and received two appointments to the All-Academic Team.
After completing his studies in April 2013, the attacker received a trial contract with the Abbotsford Heat from the American Hockey League for the remainder of the 2012/13 season . For this he completed four games, in which he scored his first goal in the professional field. In October 2013 he was signed for an initial year by league rivals Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . There he also played for their farm team , the Wheeling Nailers , from the ECHL during the season . The same thing was repeated after a contract extension in the meantime in the 2014/15 season , although he now played mostly for the Penguins. After another contract extension in the summer of 2015, the Canadian spent the entire season in the AHL and finally recommended himself for a contract with cooperation partner Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League . There he made his NHL debut at the end of January 2017 and subsequently established himself in the Penguins' squad, with whom he won the Stanley Cup at the end of the season.
After five years in the organization of the Penguins, Rowney did not get a new contract in Pittsburgh after the 2017/18 season, so he signed a three-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in July 2018 .
