Sexsmith is a town in the Canadian province of Alberta with around 2000 inhabitants. It was created in 1911, got its current name in 1916 and is located in one of the most important centers for wheat production in Canada.

history

In 1911 the village was founded as Bennville . The name goes back to the settler JB "Benny" Foster, on whose land it was created. However, a town of that name already existed, so the place was named after David Sexsmith , a trapper and trader who first came to the area in 1898. There he had set up accommodation for travelers in 1912 a little north of the first settlement. In 1916 he opened a shop and a post office on the site of the current location, which a railway line soon reached.

It emerged Bird's Grocery , MacEwan hardware and Weicker Hotel . 1929 Sexsmith had 250 inhabitants and became the Village applicable, a village with a certain self-government. Sexsmith was one of the first places in the Peace River Country to be fully populated, meaning that all lots were taken. The first wheat conveyor systems were built in 1917, and by 1949 the region had become one of the most important wheat suppliers to the British Empire.

In 1933, the local women's association first borrowed books from the University of Alberta Extension Library . In 1946 the Young People's Club opened its first public library, and in the same year the Women's Institute took over the library, which moved several times. It was finally named after the librarian Kay Shannon, who ran the house between 1960 and 1975, and has been called the Sexsmith Shannon Municipal Library since then . In 2005 the house had around 20,000 media available.

In 1976 Sexsmith had 1,046 residents, and in the same year Northen Alberta Rapeseed , a company with 80 employees, settled. By 2006 the population grew to 1,959 inhabitants, compared to 1,653 in 2001. By the 2011 census, the population had increased again and amounted to 2,418.

Museum society

The Sexsmith to the Smoky Historical Society was created in 1980 through work on a publication on the history of the site . It's now called the Sexsmith and District Museum Society . From 1984 to 1989 the Nels Johnson Blacksmith Shop was restored. In 1990 the museum society brought the NAR train station back to its original location and restored the structure. A section of track was also restored using traditional techniques. On June 20, 1995, CN Rail donated a freight train support car, a so-called caboose. In 1996, the museum company moved a block barn into town and set it up next to the forge where a similar barn had previously been. There was also a log cabin. In 2002 the company acquired the Frontier Lumber Company building and began restoring it. Above all, the shop fronts on the main street in the town center were restored. A committee is to develop guidelines according to which the city is to be restored in the style of the 20s and 30s. In 2003, inscriptions were placed on 17 buildings, identifying the houses as historical buildings.
