Rickard Lars Gunnar Roland Rakell (born May 5, 1993 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks from the National Hockey League since July 2012 and has been playing the right winger for them since January 2013 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2018 World Cup .
Career
Rickard Rakell began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of Spånga IS, where he was active until 2008. The center then moved to AIK Solna , for whose U16, U18 and U20 juniors he played in the following two years. For the 2010/11 season he joined the Plymouth Whalers from Canada's top junior league Ontario Hockey League . In his first season in North America he scored 19 goals and 24 assists in a total of 50 games, whereupon he was selected in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft as the 30th player by the Anaheim Ducks . In the following season he was able to increase his points yield to 62 points in 60 games and also convinced in the playoffs with 12 points in 13 games for Plymouth in the Ontario Hockey League .
In early July 2012, Rakell signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks. After the Swede convinced in the training camp of the Ducks, he made his debut after the end of the NHL lockout in the following season - on January 19, 2013 in the away game at the Vancouver Canucks - for the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League . He played a total of four games for Anaheim, but remained pointless. After he was sent back to the Whalers, he finished the regular season with 44 points in 40 games and also knew how to convince with 15 points in as many games in the playoffs.
After the 2015/16 season, as a restricted free agent , the Swede was unable to agree on a new contract with the Ducks for a long time, so that he was not part of the team at the start of the new season. It wasn't until October 14, 2016 that he signed a new six-year contract in Anaheim, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 3.8 million. In the 2017/18 season, he significantly increased his personal statistics to a previous career record of 69 points in 77 games. He also led the Ducks for the first time in the scorer ranking.
International
For Sweden , Rakell took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 2011 , 2012 and 2013 . In 2016 he was in the Swedish squad for the World Cup of Hockey , but had to cancel due to illness as part of the preparation for the tournament. At the 2018 World Cup , he won the gold medal with the Tre Kronor , leading his team with 14 scorer points and being elected to the all-star team of the tournament.
