Sam Steel (born February 3, 1998 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League since December 2016 .
Career
Sam Steel played for a number of youth teams in Sherwood Park , a suburb of Edmonton , in his youth . In 2013 the Regina Pats selected him in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in second position, so that he ran up for the team from the end of the 2013/14 season in the highest-ranking junior league in the region. In his first two seasons, the Center established as a regular scorer and subsequently took on the CHL Top Prospects Game in part before him Anaheim Ducks in NHL Entry Draft in 2016 considered at the 30th place. He then increased his personal statistics significantly, recording 50 goals and 81 assists for 131 scorer points in 66 games in the 2016/17 season . The Canadian not only led the WHL and thus received the Bob Clarke Trophy , but also surpassed all players in the entire Canadian Hockey League , so that he received the CHL Top Scorer Award . In addition, he was honored as WHL Player of the Year with the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy and appointed to the WHL East First All-Star Team . Meanwhile, he reached the playoff finals for the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Pats , but lost to the Seattle Thunderbirds .
Steel was unable to build on this performance in the following year 2017/18, recording 83 points in 54 games. However, he took part with Regina as the host team in the Memorial Cup 2018 , in which the center forward topped the scorer list and was therefore awarded the Ed Chynoweth Trophy and also honored with the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as Most Valuable Player of the tournament. With the Pats he reached the final again, but suffered a 3-0 defeat in the final against the Titan d'Acadie-Bathurst .
As part of the preparation for the 2018/19 season, Steel finally won a place in the squad of the Anaheim Ducks, who had already given him an entry-level contract in December 2016 . He subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in early October 2018 , but spent most of the season with Anaheim's farm team , the San Diego Gulls from the American Hockey League (AHL). In the 2019/20 season, the attacker finally established himself in the NHL.
International
At the international level, Steel gained its first experience in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 in November , with the team taking seventh place. At U18 level, he took part in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 , in which the Canadian selection won the gold medal, before no further appearances followed in this age group. The attacker then represented the Canadian U20 national team at the 2018 U20 World Cup and won the gold medal there with the team.
