Nicolas "Nick" Deslauriers (born February 22, 1991 in LaSalle , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League since June 2019 . The left winger , who was active as a defender until 2013 , previously spent three years in the organization of the Los Angeles Kings and the Buffalo Sabers and two more with the Canadiens de Montréal .

Career

youth

Nicolas Deslauriers was born in LaSalle and grew up in Saint-Anicet, about 80 kilometers away . He started ice skating at the age of three and later played first organized ice hockey with the Verdun Cobras in Verdun . In his youth he ran (principally as a defender) for the Châteauguay Patriotes , before he was selected in the entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) in 80th position in 2007 by the Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda , for which he was selected was on the ice at the start of the 2007/08 season.

After Deslauriers ended his debut season in the LHJMQ unspectacularly with 42 games and 9 scorer points , he increased his personal statistics significantly in the following season to 11 goals and 19 assists in 68 missions. These achievements earned him the interest of scouts , who placed him in the ranking of North American outfield players for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2009 in 59th position. In the actual draft, the Los Angeles Kings then selected him in 84th overall position. For the time being, however, the defender stayed in Rouyn-Noranda and set up a personal best in the 2009/10 season with 45 points scorer. In June 2010, the Huskies gave him to the Olympiques de Gatineau and received in return a second-round and a third-round vote for the LHJMQ Entry Draft.

At the Olympiques he was the best defender of the regular season with 43 points and even led all defenders in points (20) in the playoffs; the team reached the final, but lost there to the Saint John Sea Dogs . He then signed an entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings in May 2011 .

Manchester monarchs

For now, Deslauriers was, as expected, given over to the Manchester Monarchs , the Kings farm team from the American Hockey League . There he spent two seasons without any particular highlights before he was converted from defender to left winger in the run-up to the 2013/14 season. The Monarchs only had two strikers at the time, but 10 defenders available, and when Deslauriers scored four goals in the first preparatory game as a winger, he established himself in that position. As a result, the Canadian developed into the Monarchs' most dangerous attacker by scoring 18 goals and 21 assists in 60 AHL games. He did not end the season in Manchester, however, as he was given to the Buffalo Sabers on March 5, 2014, the trade deadline, including the Hudson Carnival ; the Kings received in return Brayden McNabb , Jonathan Parker and two second-round voting rights for the 2014 and 2015 NHL Entry Drafts .

Buffalo, Montréal and Anaheim

On the day of the trade, Deslauriers went to Rochester, expecting to play for the Rochester Americans as the Sabers farm team in the AHL the next day . However, the Sabers were injured, so the Canadian instead made his National Hockey League debut against the Florida Panthers . By the end of the regular season he completed 17 NHL missions for the Sabers; there were also five regular season games and five playoffs for the Americans. In the summer of 2014, his contract in Buffalo was extended by two years, as a result of which he was also able to secure a regular place as part of the preparation for the 2014/15 season and was the only player in the squad to complete all 82 games for Buffalo. He scored 5 goals and 10 assists, which made him (together with Nikita Sadorow ) the team's best rookie scorer.

After almost three years in Buffalo, the Sabers handed it over to the Canadiens de Montréal in October 2017 and received Zach Redmond in return . In Montréal, he then signed a new two-year contract in February 2018 until the end of the 2019/20 season. Deslauriers managed to establish himself in the NHL during this time, but at the end of June 2019 he was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 with a contract term of one year .
