LaSalle is one of the 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec . Before 2002 it was a separate municipality. In 2011 the 16.3 km² district had 74,276 inhabitants.

geography

LaSalle is located in the southeast of the Île de Montréal , on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River . The Pont Honoré-Mercier , a motorway bridge, leads across the river to the mainland. The Lachine Canal forms the north-western boundary. The arrondissement also includes uninhabited islands in the middle of the Lachine rapids : the Île aux Hérons (Heron Island), the Île aux Chèvres (Goat Island), the Sept Sœurs (Seven Sisters) and the Île au Diable (Devil's Island). Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Montreal are Lachine in the northwest, Le Sud-Ouest in the north and Verdun in the northeast.

history

In 1676, Bishop François de Montmorency-Laval established the parish of Saints-Anges-de-Lachine, the third oldest on the island. There was an important portage at the village , as barges could not pass the rapids and the goods therefore had to be transported overland. This obstacle was removed with the opening of the Lachine Canal in 1825 . In 1848 the village of Lachine split from the parish. In 1855 the self-governing municipality of Saints-Anges-de-Lachine was founded. This received city status in 1912 and was renamed LaSalle, in memory of Robert Cavelier de La Salle , who had once owned the manorial estate over the area.

At that time the place had around 500 inhabitants. From the mid-1920s, however, LaSalle developed into one of the most important industrial locations in the region, which also resulted in a marked increase in population. Major companies that settled here included a Seagram distillery and a Labatt brewery. Between 1956 and 1976 alone, the population quadrupled (from just under 19,000 to around 76,000), only to stabilize.

On January 1, 2002, LaSalle merged with the city of Montreal and has since formed an arrondissement. A referendum was held against the merger ordered by the provincial government. Although a majority voted for separation on June 20, 2004, the required quorum (approval of 35% of all voters) was not achieved.

population

According to the 2011 census, LaSalle had 74,276 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 4557 inhabitants / km². Of the respondents, 39.7% said French and 27.5% English were their mother tongue. Other important languages include Italian (7.0%), Spanish (3.5%), Chinese (2.6%), Arabic (2.4%) and Punjabi (2.4%).
