Le Sud-Ouest is one of the 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec . In 2011 the 15.7 km² district had 71,546 inhabitants.

geography

Le Sud-Ouest is located in the southeast of the Île de Montréal , on the Lachine Canal and on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River . The name (translated "the southwest") refers to the location of the district southwest of the city center. Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Montreal are Ville-Marie in the north, Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in the southwest, La Salle in the south and Verdun in the east. In the west, Le Sud-Ouest borders on the independent municipality of Westmount .

history

The area of today's city district was settled since the second half of the 17th century. There were a few small villages whose inhabitants were farming . In 1825 the Lachine Canal was opened and about two decades later more and more industrial companies began to settle. The area developed into an important industrial location; in addition, working-class suburbs emerged, the residents of which (mainly Irish immigrants) lived in sometimes poor conditions.

The rapidly growing and financially overwhelmed suburbs southwest of Montreal were incorporated early on. Saint-Gabriel started in 1887, followed by Côte-Saint-Henri and Sainte-Cunégonde in 1905, and finally Émard and Saint-Paul in 1910. Industry continued to play a major role until there was a structural crisis in the 1950s . The industrial plants were shut down or relocated to other locations, and the Lachine Canal closed in 1970. As a result, many residents moved away. This trend could be reversed at the beginning of the 21st century. An urban renewal project along the reopened canal is responsible for this .
