geography
Saint-Léonard is located in the north of the Île de Montréal . Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Montreal are Anjou in the north, Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in the east, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie in the southeast, Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension in the south and Montréal-Nord in the west.
history
In 1886 the Saint-Léonard-de-Port-Maurice district was founded. It was created by assignments of territory by the municipalities of Sault-au-Récollet and Longue-Pointe. The Sprengel is named after St. Leonhard von Porto Maurizio , a Franciscan . In 1915 the northern part split off (this area corresponds today to the Arrondissement of Anjou), while the southern part was given the status of a city.
The area was rural until the mid-1950s, but then an unprecedented period of growth began. Within 15 years the population increased by more than 50 times (925 inhabitants in 1956; 52,040 inhabitants in 1971). This was due to a large development project by a Montreal housing association . Most of the new residents were Italian immigrants. In 1962 the municipality changed its name to Saint-Léonard. On January 1, 2002 it merged with Montreal and has since formed an arrondissement.
population
According to the 2011 census, Saint-Léonard had 75,707 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 5608 inhabitants / km². In no other arrondissement is the proportion of non-official languages higher than in Saint-Léonard, with Italian clearly predominating.
