Leonhard of Porto Maurizio
Leonhard von Porto Maurizio OFM ( Leonardo da Porto Maurizio , bourgeois Paolo Girolamo Casanuova , born December 20, 1676 in Porto Maurizio, today Imperia (Liguria) , † November 26, 1751 in Rome ) was a Franciscan and preacher. He gave the Way of the Cross devotion its present form and is said to have been involved in the construction of more than 500 ways of the Cross. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .
Leonhard was beatified in 1796 and canonized in 1867 ; In 1923 he was appointed patron of the people's missionaries . His feast day is November 26th . The relics of St. Leonhard rest in the high altar of the church of San Bonaventura al Palatino .
