Anjou is one of the 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Quebec . Before 2002 it was a separate municipality. In 2011 the 13.7 km² district had 41,928 inhabitants.

geography

Anjou is located in the north of the Île de Montréal . Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Montreal are Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in the east, Saint-Léonard in the south, Montréal-North in the west and Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles in the northwest. Anjou borders in the northeast on the independent municipality of Montréal-Est . The district is characterized by two motorways that cross here, Autoroute 25 and Autoroute 40 . Due to the favorable traffic situation, numerous industrial and commercial enterprises have settled here.

history

In 1886 the Saint-Léonard-de-Port-Maurice district was founded . In 1915 the southern part split off and formed a city whose area today corresponds to the arrondissement of Saint-Léonard. The northern remaining area remained a rural district. In the 1950s, the area got sucked into the rapidly growing agglomeration. In 1956 the district became a municipality with town status. Associated with this was a renaming to Anjou. The name is reminiscent of the historic province of Anjou in western France , where many of the colonists in New France came from. The construction of the motorway resulted in a significant development boost; In the 1960s alone, the population more than tripled.

On January 1, 2002, Anjou merged with Montreal and has since formed an arrondissement. A referendum was held against the merger ordered by the provincial government. Although a majority voted in favor of detachment on June 20, 2004, the required quorum (approval of 35% of all voters) was not achieved.

population

According to the 2011 census, Anjou had 41,928 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 3060 inhabitants / km². Of those surveyed, 76.3% said French and 7.9% said English as their mother tongue. Other important languages include Spanish (3.6%), Arabic (2.1%), Italian (1.7%), Romanian (1.7%), Haitian (1.3%) and Vietnamese (1, 3%).
