geography
Montréal-Nord is located in the north of the Île de Montréal , on the east bank of the Rivière des Prairies . history
The arrondissement goes back to the Sault-au-Récollet district, founded in 1845. Two communities split off from this in 1896 and 1897. The remaining area separated in 1910 into a village community (municipalité de village) and a district (municipalité de paroisse) , both of which continued to bear the name Sault-au-Récollet. The northern district received city status in 1915 and renamed itself Montréal-Nord, the southern village community was incorporated into Montreal in 1916. In 1967 efforts were made to change the community name, which was perceived as not very original, but ultimately everything stayed the same. On January 1, 2002, Montréal-Nord merged with Montreal and has since formed an arrondissement.
