Course of the Rivière des Prairies between Île Jésus and Île de Montréal |
The Rivière des Prairies ( English River of the Prairies or Back River) is a river in the Canadian province of Québec and forms one of the estuary branches of the Ottawa in the Hochelaga archipelago .
It begins in the Lac des Deux Montagnes and flows northeastwards, separating the Île de Montréal from the Île Jésus . In the river runs the border between the cities of Montreal (in the southeast) and Laval (in the northwest). After around 50 kilometers, it includes the Rivière des Mille Îles and the Rivière L'Assomption . Shortly afterwards, on the northern tip of the Île de Montréal across from Charlemagne , it flows into the Saint Lawrence River .
There are numerous islands in the river. These include the Île Bizard , the Îles Laval and the Île de la Visitation . The latter has had a run -of-river power plant operated by Hydro-Québec with six generators and an output of 48 MW since 1930 . Below the Îles Laval there are rapids , the Rapides du Cheval Blanc .
The river got its name in 1615 from Samuel de Champlain .
