The Île Jésus is an island in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is surrounded by the Rivière des Prairies and the Rivière des Mille Îles , two branches of the Ottawa estuary . It is located north of the Île de Montréal and a few kilometers west of the Saint Lawrence River . With an area of 242 km², it is the second largest island in the Hochelaga archipelago . The large city of Laval covers the entire Île Jésus, with the urban areas in the center of the island and on the south and west banks, while the northern and eastern parts are rural.
The island name is derived from the Jesuits (French Compagnie de Jésus ) and was first mentioned in 1636 in a protocol of the Compagnie de la Nouvelle France .
