Pierrefonds-Roxboro is one of the 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec . Before 2002, Pierrefonds and Roxboro were separate parishes. In 2011 the 27.1 km² district had 68,410 inhabitants.

geography

Pierrefonds-Roxboro is located in the west of the Île de Montréal and in the northern part of the West Iceland region . The district extends over a length of around 15 kilometers along the Rivière des Prairies , but is barely more than one and a half kilometers wide. Pierrefonds is to the west of the district, Roxboro to the east. Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Montreal are L'Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève in the northwest and Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Saint-Laurent in the east. Pierrefonds-Roxboro also borders on the following independent municipalities: Senneville in the west, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue in the southwest, Kirkland in the south and Dollard-Des Ormeaux in the southeast.

history

In 1904 the commune of Sainte-Geneviève separated and Sainte-Geneviève-de-Pierrefonds was founded. The influential politician Joseph-Adolphe Chauret was largely responsible for this . Two years earlier he had built a stately home modeled after Pierrefonds Castle in the French Oise department . In 1958, the municipality received city status, which was associated with the renaming of Pierrefonds.

The village of Roxboro split off from Sainte-Geneviève-de-Pierrefonds in 1914 and formed its own municipality. The meaning of the place name, composed of the English words rocks (rocks) and borough (city), is not clear. It may be due to the fact that numerous residents were active in the Montreal construction industry at the time.

On January 1, 2002, both parishes merged with the city of Montreal. Pierrefonds was then united with Senneville in an arrondissement, Roxboro with Dollard-Des Ormeaux . A referendum was held against the merger ordered by the provincial government. Although a majority voted in both places on June 20, 2004, the required quorum (approval of 35% of all voters) was not achieved. Since January 1, 2006, Pierrefonds and Roxboro have been merged to form an arrondissement.

population

According to the 2011 census, Pierrefonds-Roxboro had 68,410 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 2524 inhabitants / km². Other important languages include Arabic (6.2%), Italian (3.0%), Spanish (2.6%), Chinese (2.1%), Romanian (1.8%) and Tamil (1, 8th %). This is the only district where English is spoken most often.
