history

The monastery was founded in the 14th century by the city of Bonn as a leprosarium established with small apartments for the lepers to the 1412 Lazarus was come Chapel. Since leprosy no longer occurred in Europe in the 18th century, the leprosy was closed in 1713 and henceforth used as a manor, the income from which was used for charitable purposes. In 1868 the Catholic Association of Bonn bought the property from the city's poor administration and built an orphanage there until 1872, the St. Joseph an der Höhe teaching and educational institution . At the end of the First World War the home was bankrupt, the building, which was used as a hospital at times during the war, was empty. In 1920 the Redemptorist Order acquired the building and opened a religious school with boarding school, the Collegium Josephinum , as well as a monastery for the priests teaching in the school. The National Socialists closed the school and monastery in 1940 and maintained a teacher training institute there until 1944; later the building was used as a military hospital and soldiers' quarters. In 1945 the Redemptorists resumed school and monastery operations.

Today the monastery maintains a senior citizens' home, a house for assisted living and a youth home in addition to the school. 23 brothers live in the monastery (as of 2011).

architecture

The monastery church St. Josef an der Höhe is one of the oldest buildings in the monastery. The neo-Gothic church was built between 1883 and 1887 by the architect Heinrich Wiethase . The church is colorfully designed and has a neo-Gothic high altar (built in 1907). One of the most valuable works of art is a statue of Lazarus with a collecting cup from the 16th century, which originally stood in the chapel of the leprosarium.
