Ville-Marie is one of the 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec . In 2011 the 16.5 km² district had 84,013 inhabitants. Ville-Marie is downtown Montreal.

geography

Ville-Marie is located in the east of the Île de Montréal , between Mont Royal and the Saint Lawrence River . It is the city center of Montreal with the most important institutions, facilities and buildings. The offshore islands of Île Sainte-Hélène and Île Notre-Dame also belong to the district . The district is named after the Fort Ville-Marie built in 1642 on the Pointe-à-Callière , the location of the first French settlement. The county boundaries essentially correspond to the city limits of Montreal in the late 19th century, before the first incorporations.

Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Montreal are Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in the north, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie in the north-west, Le Plateau-Mont-Royal , Outremont and Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in the west and Le Sud -Ouest in the south. In addition, Ville-Marie borders the independent municipality of Westmount in the southwest .

Districts

Despite the great economic, institutional and tourist importance of the district, there are also several residential areas in Ville-Marie. Other quarters are mixed residential and business zones. The density of the resident population is one of the highest of any city center in North America. A special feature is the Montreal underground city , a 30-kilometer network of pedestrian tunnels that connects 35% of the residential and 80% of the office space, regardless of the weather.
