The Maison de Radio-Canada is a skyscraper in Montreal . It is located on Boulevard René-Lévesque northeast of the city center and is the broadcasting center of the French-speaking part of the Canadian state broadcaster CBC / Radio-Canada .

description

CBC / Radio-Canada, founded in 1936, initially broadcast from the former Hotel Ford in Montreal. Over the years the radio and television program has been continuously expanded so that the building gradually turned out to be too small. In the 1960s, a shabby neighborhood near the Molson brewery was completely demolished. A 105 meter high skyscraper with 24 floors was built on the now vacant site according to plans by the Swedish architect Tore Björnstad.

The Maison de Radio-Canada mainly serves as the administration building for the broadcasting company. The broadcast studios and control centers are located in several adjacent low-rise buildings, some of them also underground. The following programs are distributed from here:

  • Radio: Première Chaîne, Espace musique, CBME-FM, CBM-FM, CBF-FM, CBFX-FM
  • Television: Télévision de Radio-Canada, Réseau de l'information, CBMT-DT, CBFT-DT

Since 2008 there have been plans to increase the outbuildings of the Maison de Radio-Canada in order to make better use of the site. A $ 1.6 billion investment project includes the construction of 2,000 apartments, offices, commercial and public spaces.

The street on which the Maison de Radio-Canada is located was originally called Rue Dorchester. It was renamed in 1987 in honor of Quebec Prime Minister René Lévesque , who worked as a reporter and presenter for CBC / Radio-Canada before starting his political career.
