Outremont is one of the 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec . Before 2002 it was a separate municipality. In 2011 the 3.9 km² urban district had 23,566 inhabitants. This makes Outremont the smallest arrondissement in terms of area.
geography
Outremont is located in the center of the Île de Montréal , on the northwestern slope of the 211 meter high Colline d'Outremont, one of the three peaks of Montreal's local mountain, Mont Royal . Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Montreal are Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension in the north-west, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie in the north, Le Plateau-Mont-Royal in the north-east, Ville-Marie in the south-east and Côte-des-Neiges-Notre- Dame-de-Grâce in the south. In the west, Outremont borders on the independent municipality of Mont-Royal .
history
The Sulpizianerorden , who exercised the manorial rule over the Île de Montréal, wanted to develop the interior of the island for agriculture. For this purpose, he awarded parcels on the northwest side of Mont Royal from 1694. The area populated by farming families was initially called Côte Sainte-Catherine. It was not until the 19th century that the population began to increase noticeably. It was mainly people of British origin who settled there, who made up four fifths of the population around 1880.
In 1875 the community of Outremont was founded. The name is derived from a representative country house that still exists today, which was built in 1833 by Louis-Tancrède Bouthillier and was called Outre-Mont ("on the other side of the mountain"). In 1895 Outremont received city status and developed into an attractive residential area for the wealthy. The Anglophone population continued to decline as more and more French-speaking people settled. In addition, numerous Hasidic Jews moved here. On January 1, 2002, Outremont merged with the city of Montreal and has since formed an arrondissement.
