The Mont-Royal Cemetery ( French Cimetière Mont-Royal , English Mount Royal Cemetery ) is a cemetery in the Canadian city of Montreal . It is 67 hectares and is located in the Outremont district . The cemetery is located on the northwest slope of Montreal's local mountain, Mont Royal . It is bounded by the campus of the Université de Montréal in the west, by the Boulevard Mont-Royal in the north, by the Parc du Mont-Royal in the east and the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery in the south.

The cemetery opened in 1852. Since then, over 162,000 funerals have taken place. In 1901 the first crematorium in Canada was opened here. There is a cemetery of honor for soldiers who have been awarded the Victoria Cross , the Commonwealth's highest distinction. Originally the cemetery was reserved for Protestants , which is why mainly Anglophone Canadians were buried here. The neighboring Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery was Roman Catholic and was mainly used by French Canadians. Both cemeteries are now open to all denominations.

The cemetery was declared a Historic Site on December 15, 1998 .
