Location of Mont-Royal in the Montreal agglomeration |
Mont-Royal (English Mount Royal ) is a municipality in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located on the Île de Montréal and forms an enclave within Montreal . The city has an area of 7.66 km² and has 19,503 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Mont-Royal is located in the central part of the Île de Montréal, on the north-west side of the 233-meter-high Mont Royal Mont Royal . The municipality is almost completely enclosed by the area of the city of Montreal, namely by the districts of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension , Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce , Outremont and Saint-Laurent . In the south there is a short border with Côte-Saint-Luc . The main axes of the city are a railway line in an east-west direction and two main roads running diagonally to it, which intersect at the station in an oval park. Downtown Montreal is around eight kilometers away.
history
The founding of Mont-Royal goes back to plans by Frederick Todd , who built a model town at the foot of Mont Royal on behalf of the Canadian Northern Railway . This should follow the principles of the urban planner Ebenezer Howard and the City Beautiful movement. The railway company bought agricultural land and parceled it out. In order to stimulate the settlement, she built the 4.8 km long Mont-Royal railway tunnel under the mountain through to the center of Montreal. The city of Mont-Royal was founded on December 21, 1912, the tunnel was opened on October 21, 1918.
On January 1, 2002, 27 parishes on the island were merged with Montreal. Resistance arose especially in communities with a high proportion of English speakers, as this measure had been ordered by the provincial government of the separatist Parti Québécois . From 2003, the Parti libéral du Québec provided the government and promised to reverse the merger of the municipalities. On July 20, 2004, referendums were held in 22 former municipalities. In Mont-Royal, 81.8% of the electorate voted for the separation. The community was re-established on January 1, 2006, but had to cede numerous competencies to the community association.
population
According to the 2011 census, Mont-Royal had 19,503 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 2546.1 inh / km². 44.0% of the population stated French as their main language, the share of English was 21.6%. 1.6% said they were bilingual (French and English), other languages and multiple answers accounted for 32.8%. The most important non-official major languages were Arabic (6.9%), Greek (3.0%), Italian (3.0%) and Vietnamese (2.9%). Only French spoke 11.7%, only English 9.8%. In 2001, 53.2% of the population were Roman Catholic , 12.0% Jewish , 10.9% Orthodox , 6.0% Protestant , 5.5% Muslim and 7.6% non-denominational.
Economy and Infrastructure
The industrial park at the south-western end of Mont-Royals covers a surface that corresponds to 40% of the entire municipal area. Due to the dense development, existing commercial areas have to be redensified or converted for new businesses. In addition to some interior decorators near the entrance to the industrial park, Mont-Royal also has a large number of shops for everyday items.
traffic
The main arteries of Mont-Royal are two motorways, Autoroute 15 and Autoroute 40 . The city has two train stations on the AMT suburban line between Montreal Central Station and Deux-Montagnes . The Mont-Royal train station forms the actual center of the city, while the Canora train station is located at the west portal of the Mont-Royal tunnel . Several bus lines of the Société de transport de Montréal provide connections with neighboring communities and the center of Montreal.
Established businesses
The Canadian retail chain Dollarama has had its headquarters in Mont-Royal since 2007 .
