L'Île-Dorval is a municipality in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is synonymous with the island Île Dorval, which is around half a kilometer off the south coast of the Île de Montréal in Lac Saint-Louis .

The community is a constitutional curiosity. It has city status, but in the 2011 census it only had five permanent residents. This makes it the smallest municipality in Canada in terms of area and population. In 2001 the number of inhabitants even fell to zero. However, since the Québec Province electoral law allows residents and landowners to vote in community matters, fifty voters were registered in 2004.

On January 1, 2002, 27 municipalities were merged with Montreal , including L'Île-Dorval. Resistance arose especially in communities with a high proportion of English speakers, as this measure had been ordered by the provincial government of the separatist Parti Québécois . From 2003, the Parti libéral du Québec provided the government and promised to reverse the merger of the municipalities. On July 20, 2004, referendums were held in 22 former municipalities. The voters registered in L'Île-Dorval spoke out in favor of the separation with 37 to 12 votes. The community was then re-established on January 1, 2006.

The island, on which there are several dozen holiday homes, is connected to the town of Dorval by a ferry .
