Location of Côte-Saint-Luc in the Montreal agglomeration |
Côte-Saint-Luc is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located on the Île de Montréal and forms an enclave within Montreal . The city has an area of 6.95 km² and has 32,321 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Côte-Saint-Luc is located in the central part of the Île de Montréal. The community is largely enclosed by the area of the city of Montreal, namely by the boroughs of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in the east, Lachine in the south and Saint-Laurent in the west. It also borders on other municipalities: in the north on Mont-Royal , in the north-east on Hampstead and in the south-east on Montréal-Ouest . Downtown Montreal is around eight kilometers away.
history
The name of the community is derived on the one hand from its location on a hill (French: côte ), on the other hand from Luc de La Corne Saint-Luc, a French officer. At the beginning of the 18th century the wooded hill was cleared and then used for agriculture for two centuries. A settlement was built before 1900 and the municipality was founded in 1903. Like other municipalities in the west of the island, Côte-Saint-Luc had an above-average proportion of English-speaking residents from the start. 1958 Côte-Saint-Luc was raised to the city. The construction of numerous high-rise buildings in the 1960s resulted in rapid population growth. Mainly Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe settled there, so that today more than two thirds of the population are of Jewish faith.
On January 1, 2002, 27 parishes on the island were merged with Montreal. Resistance arose especially in communities with a high proportion of English speakers, as this measure had been ordered by the provincial government of the separatist Parti Québécois . From 2003, the Parti libéral du Québec provided the government and promised to reverse the merger of the municipalities. On July 20, 2004, referendums were held in 22 former municipalities. In Côte-Saint-Luc, 87.0% of voters were in favor of the separation. The community was re-established on January 1, 2006, but had to cede numerous competencies to the community association.
population
