history
In 1910, Salim Rossy opened a retail store under the name S.Rossy Inc. on Rue Craig in Montreal , where his ten children temporarily helped out. George Rossy, one of Salim Rossy's sons, took over the management of the family business in 1937, which he ran until his death in 1973. As under his father, he expanded with the company and increased the number of stores to 20. Under the aegis of George Rossy, the business model was aligned with that of the Woolworth retail chain , which at the time was very successful with its range of low-priced items. From 1973 Larry Rossy, son of George Rossy, took over the management. He turned a shop in Matane into a shop in 1992 that only sold items for a Canadian dollar or less. This store was renamed Dollarama and its model was soon applied to all of the Rossy's other stores. In the same year, the first branch outside Québec opened in Nouveau-Brunswick , followed by a branch in Ontario two years later, in 1994. In the early 2000s, additional stores were opened and taken over, and two central warehouses were built. In 2004, Bain Capital acquired a majority controlling interest in the company. An IPO took place in October 2009 and reduced Bain Capital's stake in the company. The remaining shares in the investment group were sold in 2011. In 2017, Dollarama had 1,160 sales offices.
