First Quantum Minerals Ltd. is a Canadian mining company based in Vancouver .

activities

The object of the company is the exploration and mining of ores in Africa and Scandinavia . The main products are currently copper and gold.

The company currently operates seven mines :

  • the Kansanshi opencast mine in Kansanshi , Zambia (80% share) - main product copper, by-product gold, has been produced since 2005
  • Guelb Mohgrein near Akjoujt , Mauritania (100% share) - main product copper, by-product gold, produced since 2006
  • Frontier (95%), DR Congo - main product copper, produced since 2007.
  • Las Cruces, Spain (100% share)
  • Kevitsa (100% share, production since 2013) and Pyhäsalmi (100% share) in Finland ; Nickel and copper
  • Ravensthorpe, Australia (100% share)
  • Çayeli, Turkey (100% share)

The start of production at Kolwezi (65%, DR Congo. Main product copper, by-product cobalt , processing of overburden) was planned for 2010, but First Quantum lost its license in 2009 after a political dispute with the Congolese government. The Lonshi copper mine in the DR Congo was wiped out in 2008.

With the purchase of Scandinavian Minerals in 2008, the Kevitsa project came to First Quantum.

In addition, First Quantum Minerals has two investments:

  • 16.9% in the Mopani Copper Mines (Zambia), which operate a copper mine with a copper smelter,
  • 17.3% in Equinox Minerals Ltd. (Zambia), which is developing the Lumwana copper mine.

The company was founded in 1996. Adastra Minerals was acquired in 2006 and Scandinavian Minerals in 2008 .
