History of the stock market

Main article: History of the Toronto Stock Exchange

The Toronto Stock Exchange likely grew out of the Association of Brokers , an association of stockbrokers founded on July 26, 1852 . No record of the transactions of this association has survived. On October 25, 1861, 24 businessmen met in the Masonic Lodge building and founded the Toronto Stock Exchange. A law passed by the Ontario Legislative Assembly in 1878 gave the exchange official status.

The TSX grew steadily in the size and number of stocks it traded. It closed briefly for three months in 1914 for fear of financial panic at the start of the First World War. In 1934 it merged with its main competitor, the mining-specialized Standard Stock and Mining Exchange . In 1977 the TSX introduced the computer-based trading system CATS . In 1997 floor trading was stopped and completely switched to computer trading . In 1999, Barbara G. Stymiest became the first female president of a North American stock exchange.
