The Royal Bank of Canada (French: Banque Royale du Canada ) is Canada's largest bank . The company is listed on the S & P / TSX 60 Canadian stock index and on the Toronto Stock Exchange . The Royal Bank of Canada has over 1,300 branches in Canada and approximately 80,000 employees in currently 55 countries. The Royal Bank of Canada is known by the abbreviation RBC. RBC has its legal headquarters in Montreal while its operational headquarters are in Toronto . According to Forbes' list of the world's 2000 largest companies, the Royal Bank of Canada ranks 68th.
history
The Royal Bank of Canada was founded in Halifax in 1864 under the name Merchants Bank . The founders were merchants from Halifax with the aim of promoting the fish and timber industry and trade with Europe. In its early years the bank had more ties to England than to the Canadian hinterland. In 1869, the name of the bank was changed to Merchants' Bank of Halifax to accommodate expansion into New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island . In 1882 the first branch outside Canada was opened in Bermuda .
With the first branch in Montreal in 1887, the time of continental expansion finally began. In a very short time branches were established in British Columbia , Manitoba , Saskatchewan and Alberta . In 1901 the name of the bank was changed again to the now known Royal Bank of Canada. In 1907 the headquarters were relocated to Montreal.
