The Royal Bank Plaza is a skyscraper in Toronto , Ontario ( Canada ). It is the de facto headquarters of the Royal Bank of Canada . The building shares a block with the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in the financial district of Toronto, which is enclosed by Bay Street , Front Street , York Street and Wellington Street.
In the late 1970s, the Royal Bank of Canada decided to move its headquarters from Montreal to Toronto and to build a new building for it. The building, built in 1979, consists of two office towers: the higher south tower (180 m) and the north tower (112 m). The exterior of the two high-rise buildings is mostly clad with glass. Together the towers have over 14,000 windows. Each window is coated with a coating of 24 carat (100%) gold . The gold is used for thermal insulation to save heating and air conditioning costs.
In addition to the offices, the Royal Bank Plaza also has a shopping center that is connected to the underground PATH system.
