The Fairmont Royal York is a luxury hotel in downtown Toronto . It is on Front Street across from Union Station . The hotel belongs to the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain , which also operates the Château Frontenac in Québec . The hotel is connected to PATH , the Toronto underground city .

The Fairmont Royal York was designed by the Canadian architects Ross and Macdonald and the architect Henry Sproatt and opened on June 11, 1929. At 124 meters (28 stories), it was the tallest building in the city until 1931 and the tallest and largest hotel in the British Commonwealth . The hotel originally had 1,048 rooms and has had around 1,600 rooms since it was expanded in 1959 with an east wing. The hotel traditionally serves as accommodation for Elizabeth II and the British royal family during their stays in Toronto. In these cases, a floor is reserved for the queen and her companions. Today's hotel is the third at this point; it replaced the old Queen's Hotel.
