In Canada in particular, Fairmont is known for characteristic and famous historical hotels such as the Empress in Victoria , the Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver, the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, the Château Frontenac in Québec , the Château Laurier in Ottawa or the Banff Springs Hotel in Banff . What these hotels have in common stylistically and architecturally is the reference to historicism with respective borrowings from Neo-Gothic , Neo-Renaissance and Art Déco . Most of Fairmont's Canadian hotels were originally built by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). CPR took over the Fairmont hotel chain in 1999 and used this name for its hotels from then on. In 2001 the hotel division was spun off again under its current name.

In 2006 Colony Capital started a joint venture with the Saudi Kingdom Holding ; together they acquired the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. This is how the Holding FRHI Hotels & Resorts , which manages Raffles , Fairmont and Swissôtel, came into being . On July 12, 2016, the takeover of FRHI by Accor was announced.
