Hotel Vancouver

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver (commonly known as Hotel Vancouver ) is a 556-room luxury hotel in the Canadian city of Vancouver . It is located in the city center at the intersection of West Georgia Street and Burrard Street, next to Christ Church Cathedral . The building is 111 meters high, has 17 floors and is owned by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts . It was the tallest building in the city from 1939 to 1972 before it was superseded by the Toronto Dominion Tower . It itself had replaced the Marine Building as the tallest building.

There were two previous buildings called Hotel Vancouver one block away at the intersection of Granville Street and West Georgia Street. The first five-story building from the late 19th century was replaced in 1916 by a 77-meter-high new building in neo-renaissance style. During the Second World War, the second hotel served as accommodation for the troops. After the war ended, it was occupied by homeless veterans. It was demolished in 1949.

Construction on the current Hotel Vancouver began in 1928 on behalf of the Canadian National Railway , but rested at the time of global economic crisis for five years. The Canadian Pacific Railway got on as a partner and in May 1939 the Art Deco style building was opened. Until 1999 the hotel was part of the Canadian Pacific Hotels chain , which was then spun off from the group under the name Fairmont.

The facade of the Hotel Vancouver served as the backdrop for the television series Hotel Zack & Cody and the film Fifty Shades of Gray .
