The Savoy Hotel is a luxury hotel in London , England . It is located on the River Thames , in the street The beach in the City of Westminster .

The hotel

The Savoy Hotel was built by Richard D'Oyly Carte , the owner of the Savoy Theater next door, and opened on August 6, 1889. With 263 rooms, it is one of the most prestigious and opulent hotels in London. It also has seven restaurants. The name of the hotel comes from the Savoy Palace , which once stood on this site. The first manager was César Ritz , who later founded the Ritz Hotel . The hotel was designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt , who also designed the Wigmore Hall .

The Savoy has long been famous for its inventive chefs. In his kitchen, the peach Melba was invented, which was named after the famous singer Nellie Melba . The creator of this dish was the French chef Auguste Escoffier . The Melba toast should also have been created in the kitchen of Savoy.

The Savoy Court , the square in front of the hotel, is the only road in the UK , which is driven on the right side of the road. Taxis like to take advantage of this to turn around comfortably.

The hotel was acquired in January 2005 by the Arab investor Prince al-Walid ibn Talal Al Saud and has since been operated by the Toronto - based hotel group Fairmont Hotels and Resorts . After three years of renovation, the hotel reopened on October 10, 2010.
