In 1887 the post office renamed the place Telluride in order not to confuse it with Columbia , California . The origin of the name Telluride has not been conclusively clarified. It is probably derived from gold tellurides , a group of minerals named after the element tellurium and typical of volcanic gold deposits. However, they are almost completely absent in the area around Telluride. A single rock sample from the region ever examined was likely calaverite , one of the gold tellurides. It is also said that the name is a change in the sentence “To hell you ride!” In reference to the harsh climate and the steep mountains.
Robert Leroy Parker aka Butch Cassidy raided the San Miguel Valley Bank in Telluride on June 24, 1889. He looted about $ 24,000 with his gang. This was Butch Cassidy's first recorded crime.
The city center of Telluride received on July 4, 1961 as a Historic District the status of a National Historic Landmark .
