Ralph Lauren KBE [ ˈlɔː.rən ] ( listen ? / I ) (born October 14, 1939 in the Bronx , New York City as Ralph Lifshitz ) is an American fashion designer and founder of the Ralph Lauren Corporation fashion company . Audio file / audio sample

Life

Ralph Lauren is the son of Fraydl and Frank Lifshitz, a house painter . His parents were Ashkenazi Jews and emigrated to the United States from Pinsk in Belarus . Lauren first attended the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy, but later moved to DeWitt Clinton High School. During this time he made his first living selling ties to his classmates. At the age of twelve he was already investing the money he earned in expensive suits. In 1957 he graduated. At the age of 16 Ralph and his two brothers Terry and Lenny decided to change their last names.

Lauren began economics at Baruch College to study, but was after two years for poor performance deregistered . From 1962 he served two years in the United States Army . In the summer of 1964 he met the receptionist Ricky Anne Low-Beer at his ophthalmologist's office, whom he married on December 20 of the same year in New York. In 1969 and 1971 their sons Andrew and David were born, in 1974 their daughter Dylan.

After his time in the army, he worked as a salesman for the Brooks Brothers fashion house . In 1967, a $ 50,000 loan from fashion retailer Norman Hilton enabled him to design his own tie collection under the Polo label. In the same year he bought from Brooks Brothers, the rights to the brand and set out independently . In the future, Lauren not only concentrated on ties, but also designed complete collections for men. In 1970 he won the Coty Award and began to create women's collections the following year. In 1972 he was commissioned to design the clothes for the film The Great Gatsby . In the same year he launched a polo shirt in his own collection , which he put on the chest with the polo player on almost every Lauren product today. The model is still one of his most successful creations today.

In early April 1987, Lauren was diagnosed with a brain tumor . After a successful operation, he was completely cured in April 1987.

In 1999 Ralph Lauren took on a minor supporting role in the series Friends . He played himself in the episode A Radiant Impression .

In 2007, Lauren rented Central Park in New York for a 40th anniversary party . Members of the Kennedy and Bush families as well as “Hollywood greats” such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Dustin Hoffman appeared as well- wishers .

In March 2012, Forbes Magazine estimated Ralph Lauren's net worth at $ 7.5 billion. Lauren would be on the list of the richest people in the world at number 122. He lives in an approximately 5,700 hectare ranch in Ouray County , Colorado .

Ralph Lauren's son David has been married to Lauren Bush since 2011 . His nephew Greg Lauren is Elizabeth Berkley's husband .
