The Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum ( BFA ) is an Austrian authority directly subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior , which started operations on January 1, 2014.

The main tasks of the BFA include the implementation of first-instance asylum and aliens law proceedings - with the exception of criminal proceedings and visa matters - and the issuing of residence permits for reasons worthy of consideration. The BFA implements the Asylum Act (2005, AsylG), the 7th  (deportation and tolerance) , 8th  (measures to end residence) and 11th  (Austrian documents for foreigners) main part of the  Aliens Police Act (2005, FPG) as well as the Federal Basic Welfare Act (GVG- B).

The issues of integration , the Aliens Employment Act, border controls and competencies from the Settlement and Residence Act in the area of ​​legal migration that go beyond the area of ​​humanitarian residence permits do not fall within the competence of the BFA . Likewise, the BFA has no criminal and security police competencies or competencies in the area of enforcement in the police detention centers and the immediate deportation process .

The BFA is a monocratic authority with headquarters in Vienna and a regional directorate in each federal state as well as a uniform service and technical supervision. In addition, there are five federal care centers for asylum seekers , two of which are also initial reception centers (EAST), EAST Ost in Traiskirchen (Lower Austria) and EAST West in St. Georgen im Attergau (Upper Austria). There is also a detention center in Vordernberg in Styria .
