Ouray County is a county in the southwest of the US state Colorado in the heart of the San Juan Mountains . Its landscape is dominated by numerous mountains that are higher than 4000 m. The county seat is in Ouray .

Ouray is bordered by the counties of Gunnison to the northeast, Hinsdale to the southeast, San Juan to the south, San Miguel to the southwest, and Montrose to the northwest.

history

Ouray County was formed on January 18, 1877 as the first new foundation in the newly formed state of Colorado from most of San Juan County and a small piece of Hinsdale County. The gold rush town of Ouray, founded on October 2, 1876, was designated the administrative seat on March 8, 1877. On February 19, 1881, the southern part of Ouray County became Dolores County and on February 27, 1883, the western part became independent as San Miguel County. In 1883, Ouray County was briefly renamed Uncompahgre County.

The county had a population of 3,742 people as of the 2000 census . There were 1,576 households and 1,123 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.34 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.94 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.53 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.71 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.06 percent of the total population.

Of the 1,576 households, 28.6 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4 percent were married couples living together, 6.5 percent were single mothers. 28.7 percent were not families. 23.5 percent were single households and 5.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.77 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 4.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 34.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 102.1 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 100.8 males.

The median income for a household in the 42,019 USD , and the median income for a family was 49,776 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,141 versus $ 26,176 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,335. 7.2 percent of the population and 6.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 8.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 2.9 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
