Wetterhorn Peak (English for Wetterhorn peak ) is a mountain in southwest Colorado , USA . It is part of the Uncompahgre Wilderness Area in the San Juan Mountains and lies on the border between the Counties Hinsdale and Ouray . About four kilometers to the east rises the 4,361 meter high Uncompahgre Peak . Wetterhorn Peak has a notch height of 498 meters.

The mountain, which is only thirteen kilometers from the well-known town of Ouray , was named after the Wetterhorn in Switzerland . This looks less like it than the Matterhorn . From this, however, Matterhorn Peak , another peak in the San Juan Mountains, takes its name.

Ascent

The first known ascent was made in 1906 by George Barnard, C. Smedley, WP Smedley, and D. Utter. It is believed that miners who worked in the area in the 19th century made the real first ascent.

The normal route to the summit leads over the southeastern ridge, which in turn can be reached from the course of the Matterhorn Creek. The trail begins on Henson Creek Road, which leads to County Seat Lake City . The difficulty of the route is mediocre, some of it has to be climbed. Extreme skiing is possible on the east face of the mountain .
