Uncompahgre Peak is the highest mountain in the San Juan Mountains in the US state of Colorado . It is part of the Umcompahgre Wilderness Area and is only about eleven kilometers west of Lake City in Hinsdale County .

geology

The summit area of Uncompahgre Peak is plateau-shaped and rises approximately 500 meters above the surrounding extensive valleys. The slopes of the mountain are not particularly steep, only the north slope has a 210 meter high cliff. Like all mountains in the San Juan Mountains, Uncompahgre Peak is of volcanic origin, but not a volcano . It has a notch height of 1293 meters.

Ascent

For ascents to the sixth highest mountain in Colorado, forest route 239 of the Uncompahgre National Forest is preferred . This begins southeast of the summit, about six kilometers west of Lake City. The demanding, heavily winding hiking trail climbs from the southeast over a length of six kilometers by 890 meters to the summit. There it ends near the western slope.

Surname

Uncompahgre was named after the tributary of the Gunnison River of the same name . Uncompahgre comes from the Ute word Uncompaghre and roughly means dirty water or spring of red water . Probably the hot springs near Ouray are meant . The English word peak means peak or summit.
