The Hinsdale County is a county in the state of Colorado of the United States . The county seat is Lake City , the county's only incorporated parish . Founded in 1874, the county is the most sparsely populated county in Colorado.

The county in southwest Colorado has an area of 2,909 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. The landscape of the heavily forested county is shaped by the Rocky Mountains and the continental divide runs through the county. The neighboring counties are Gunnison (north), Saguache (northeast), Mineral (east), Archuleta (southeast), La Plata (southwest), San Juan (west), and Ouray (northwest).

The county had 790 people as of the 2000 census . There were 359 households and 246 families. The population density was 0.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.34 percent white, 1.52 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, and 0.38 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.51 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.52 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 359 households, 23.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.0 percent were married couples living together, 4.7 percent were single mothers. 31.2 percent were not families. 24.8 percent were single households and 3.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.60.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 19.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 4.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 34.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 105.7 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 109.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 37,279 , and the median income for a family was $ 42,159. Males had a median income of $ 26,210 versus $ 23,750 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,360. 7.2 percent of the population and 4.5 percent of families lived below the poverty line. This included nobody under the age of 18 and 2.2 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
