Larimer County is a county in the state of Colorado in the United States . Located in northern Colorado on the Wyoming border, it is named after William Larimer , the founder of Denver . The county seat is Fort Collins .

history

The country was populated by the Ute Indians before the arrival of European settlers in the 19th century . There were also Cheyenne and Arapaho settlements on the plains. It was only when French fur hunters appeared that they had to give way.

The area eventually came to the United States with the Louisiana Purchase . With the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868) between the settlers and the Arapaho and Cheyenne, the settlement of the area by the whites began.

Larimer County was established in 1861 as one of the original 17 counties in the Colorado Territory. From the beginning it was controversial whether the county was bounded west by the Medicine Bow Mountains or the Continental Divide . In 1886 the highest court in Colorado had to make a decision that finally established the watershed as Larimer's border. In 1909 the land between the two mountain ranges was added to what is now Jackson County . The county's development was dominated by the establishment of the Denver Pacific Railroad and the turnaround in agriculture after the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Like most northern Colorado counties, Larimer County is more agricultural. In the far northeast of the county is one of the oldest and best-preserved archaeological sites in North America: The Lindenmeier Site is considered the best known evidence of the Folsom culture of prehistoric Paleo-Indians . The finds have been dated to 10,800 Before Present (~ 8850 BC).

Near Loveland is the Devil's Backbone Open Space reserve, where rock formations made of hard Dakota sandstone emerge impressively from the surrounding landscape.
